those glimmers visible in dubai were just paratroopers

Since December 13, 2022, a video shot in Dubai has fueled speculation. Some Twitter accounts claim it shows a meteor shower streaking across the city sky. But other users think it is a secret technology used to simulate natural disasters. Be careful, both of these explanations are false. The glows visible in these images are actually skydivers with flares rehearsing a stunt for an event.

Verification in a nutshell

  • Since December 13, 2022, a video shot in Dubai has been shared by French and English-speaking Twitter accounts. Some of these accounts claim that these images seen more than 150,000 times show a meteor shower, while others believe they see evidence of the use of secret technology intended to manipulate crowds.
  • But those gleams visible in the Dubai sky were skydivers with flares. This stunt was organized as part of an evening celebrating the 40e anniversary of a real estate company based in Dubai.
  • As for the secret technology called “Blue Beam project” and mentioned by some Twitter accounts, it is in fact an old conspiracy theory born in the 1990s and developed by an author known for his conspiratorial theses.

The details of the check

Four sparkling objects crossing the sky of Dubai. This is what a video shows that was taken up by French and English Twitter accounts, and finally exceeded 150,000 views.

Some accounts claim that these glittering objects are meteorites. But other users see it rather as the manifestation of a secret technology that would make it possible to simulate large-scale natural disasters. According to these accounts accustomed to conspiracy theories, this technology, which they call “blue beam project”, would aim to manipulate crowds and would therefore have been recently tested in Dubai.

An event organized by paratroopers

What do these images actually show? At the top left of the video, we notice the username @lovindubai. However, by looking for this name on Instagram, we find the official account of an entertainment media devoted to Dubai. It is this account which is at the origin of this video which he published on December 12, 2022.

But it’s not about meteorites or secret technology. On December 12, @lovindubai only explained that this video showed an “impressive air show”. However, following the reactions aroused on social networks by this first publication, @lovindubai quickly clarified that these visible lights in the sky were “paratroopers with flares”.

This information can be confirmed with to the Instagram account @damacofficial. This official account is that of Damac, a company specializing in luxury real estate in Dubai. However, Damac’s Instagram account has repeatedly published videos showing skydivers training to jump in the sky of the city. Another of his publicationsdated December 12, even warns that “paratroopers in wingsuits will launch just above the DAMAC Towers at 8 p.m. today”.

According to the company’s website, these training sessions were carried out in preparation for the 40e anniversary of Damac which was celebrated on December 15, 2022. It was on this occasion that a parachute jump was organized. The event was also streamed live on YouTube.

The “Blue Beam Project”, an old conspiracy theory

This video therefore does not show a meteor shower or the use of a secret technology called “Blue Beam project”. This theory is regularly mentioned on social networks by accounts that spread conspiratorial ideas.

The editorial staff of France24 Observers was able to discuss with Sylvain Cavalier, an auditor who takes the account et the YouTube channel Debunker of the Starsand which details the origin of this theory:

The Project Blue Beam theory is taken from a book written in 1994 by Serge Monast, a Canadian nationalist author who has published several conspiracy books. Serge Monast was convinced of the existence of a world conspiracy aimed at suppressing religions and establishing a world government.

According to him, NASA had developed a revolutionary technology which, thanks to space platforms stationed in orbit of the Earth, made it possible both to create gigantic holographic projections and to control minds. And, since the 1990s, this baseless theory has been regularly mentioned by conspiracy theorists.
