“The changes that are taking place in the world are a excellent and extraordinary opportunity for Extremadura, as we had never been able to dream,” he said this morning Guillermo Fernandez Varapresident of the Junta de Extremadura, in the III World Congress of Extremadura Citizenship Abroad celebrated in Merida.
Fernández Vara recalled during his speech “the pain what did the massive departure of 500,000 Extremadurans in the late 50s, 60s and 70s, in which Extremadura lost half of its population simply because at that time people needed a life project, a life experience and they didn’t have it here”.
Precisely, he was accompanied in the colloquium by three Extremadurans residing abroad: Cruz Sanchez de Laravice president of EL ESPAÑOL and editor of SDG ENCLAVE Y magasIN; Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Brand Director; Y Juan Manuel Benitezreporter and anchor on the Spectrum News NY1 television network.
The new times, however, could bring new opportunities for the region. “We are going to go from being a region that emigrated to being one that they will emigrate to”, remarked Fernández. Among other reasons, due to the installation in Extremadura of battery or semiconductor factories.

For the president, this is somewhat paradoxical, since many of the families from Extremadura that emigrated went to the factories in the north, many of them car factories. Now, 60 years later, “the land from which they had to leave will embrace those industries in which the car batteries so that these factories continue to exist”, he recalled.
But not only from the industry does the human being live. Another reason for choosing the Community of Extremadura as home is that “the quality of life is very high”, remarked Sánchez de Lara. “Here life is phenomenal.”
Despite this, for the speakers, the region is not selling well, or at least not as it should be. “Extremadura is the great unknown,” said Benítez. “I am excited to read good news, but unfortunately we continue to hear the perception that it is deep Spain”, added the vice president of EL ESPAÑOL.
land of talent
Like the earth, the speakers have highlighted the lack of promotion of talent from Extremadura. “There is a lot of talent and people need to know it,” Gallardo said. He gave the curious example of LG (Korean electronics brand), where all the directors —they are established in more than 100 countries— are Korean, with the exception of one, who is from Extremadura.
Fernández Vara also wanted to highlight the electrical and electronic engineering of the University of Extremadura (UEx), which has been qualified by the Shanghai Ranking —the most prestigious in the world— as the best degree of its specialty in all of Spain. Something that for the president “is not a coincidence”.

For his part, Benítez, who works as a presenter in the United States and has just won an Emmy award, said that he always tries to promote your homeland in your new home. “I always say that if you are a fan of Game of Thrones, you have to know it.” In fact, he pointed out, Extremadura could even set an example for a large city like New York in certain aspects such as the energy transition.
Sánchez de Lara, who recalled the great affection he has for his land, stressed the need to talk more about Extremadura men and women: “Every time I come, I say that they use me, but they don’t use me enough.” Thus, he made available to all local talents a great platform as it is THE SPANISH for your story to be told and encouraged them to contact her.
The general conclusion of the speakers is that there are many pending tasks to really carry out the potential of Extremadura. One of them, and which came up several times throughout the colloquium, was the train. “We are the door to Portugal and that’s a great opportunityGallardo recalled.
In spite of everything, as a climax to the day, the president of Extremadura wanted to highlight the Brilliant Future What awaits the region? “The headline of this conference was going to be ‘Start over’, like the José Luis Garci film, but now it’s going to be ‘The comeback’”, he concluded.
