Bangladesh Awami League, the country’s most traditional political party, was founded on June 23, 1949 at Tikatuli Road Garden in Old Dhaka due to historical necessity. It has held 21 national conferences since its inception. Out of this, 8 conferences were held before independence and 13 after independence. Besides, 7 more special conferences of the party were held for national needs.
After the end of the colonial rule, Awami Muslim League was established under the leadership of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, a two-day long conference on 23 and 24 June 1949 during the Pakistan period. The party was founded by the progressive section of the party opposing the then Muslim League leadership and the leaders who later led the liberation war. At the time of formation, the party was named ‘Awami Muslim League’, but in the Third National Conference held in 1955, the word Muslim was dropped and renamed as Awami League.
